Air Mauritius was founded in June 1967 and started modestly with its rotations linking Piper-Navaio between Mauritius and Rodrigues.

In 1998, Air Mauritius has been recognized as one of 145 organisations maintenance JAR (Joint Aviation Requirements) by Directorate General of Civil Aviation French (DGAC). This approval signifique Air Mauritius can perform maintenance on its planes, and may also tell its services to other airlines. Air Mauritius has a maintenance base at the international airport of SSR.
