At the European level and simultaneously at the conclusion of the Agreement between the European Union and the United States, the European Union adopted on 29 April 2004 the Council Directive 2004/82/EC on the obligation of carriers to communicate passenger data.
Adopted as part of the fight against illegal immigration and improving border controls, the directive states that Member States shall take the necessary steps to establish an obligation for carriers to transmit, the request of the authorities responsible for controlling the external borders before the end of registration, information on passengers they will carry to a border crossing point through which these persons will enter the territory of a Member State.
The data to be transmitted data are so-called APIS (Advance Passenger Information System). On 2 of section 3 of the directive lists the data: the number and type of travel document used, nationality, name, date of birth, the border crossing point used for entering the territory of Member States, the code of transport, time of departure and arrival of transport, the total number of passengers carried and the initial point of embarkation.
These data tell "API" or "APIS" must be passed before the end of registration, the authorities responsible for external border controls on request.

This is information that is not necessary to travel or is not present in some NRPs. However, it must be stated that if you provide this information to your travel agent or your airline, they will be under an obligation to transmit them to U.S. authorities.
